Late 2008 discussions were held about a possible formation of a Junior Primary (Grade 1&2) Boys Class. High numbers of Year 2 Boys in 2009 meant that most classes in our Junior Primary were going to be boy heavy, so after seeing great success with Jarrod Lamshed's upper primary boys class at our school, I put my hand up to take the class.
Wow, what did I get myself into!
This thought constantly went through my head during the first few weeks of school. There was constant noise - louder than the average class, constant movement - like a sea sitting in front of me on the floor. Simple tasks like putting resources away, following basic instructions or lining up seemed to take ten times the effort (by me directing them) than ever before. Having an entire class of boys meant that we were missing the quiet calming effect of half a class of girls.
As the weeks went by things got easier, the boys became more responsive and enthusiasm for learning washed like a wave through the classroom. Boys who would normally sit back and let the girls take charge, began to stand up and take responsibility for our class, cheers would erupt at the mention of maths, personalities began to shine and energy levels were at an all time high every morning. I spent the latter part of the 1st term trying to get the message across that 'my boys' were not naughty, just full of energy and not as quick to respond to instructions. Relief teachers would say that they were 'interesting', other teachers would warn the relievers before they even got to the class.
Towards the end of the 1st term I decided to look at my class from a different angle. Instead of being the one in charge I became a leader in their team. This new outlook on my class and my teaching has the potential to create great adventure this year. Through this blog, we invite you to follow our journey and be a part of our 2009 learning team.
